Arthouse Audit: 'Get Low' Slows But Maintains Perch
For the fifth straight weekend, Get Low maintained the top spot among limited releases. Bollywood action thriller Dabangg placed second in its opening with an impressive per theater average, while Flipped finally expanded and had its highest-grossing weekend yet. New releases Legendary and I'm Still Here failed to make much of an impression, while Heartbreaker and The Romantics saw substantial attendance in just a handful of theaters.
Get Low dropped 28 percent to $864,834 at 529 locations. It's per theater average of $1,635 was the lowest yet for the Robert Duvall-Bill Murray comedy, and it's not likely to sustain its theater count moving forward. Still, Get Low has earned a good $6.9 million through its seventh weekend, and it has a shot at reaching the $10 million mark before the end of its run.
Dabangg opened to $628,137 at 62 locations. Its $10,131 per theater average was the highest for a Bollywood movie since My Name is Khan in February.
Flipped was originally slated for a nationwide expansion on Aug. 27, but that ended up being substituted for a lighter expansion this weekend. The Rob Reiner coming-of-age tale earned $481,438 at 442 locations for a weak per theater average of $1,089. Since early August, Flipped has grossed $1.3 million.
Mao's Last Dancer continued to post solid earnings and was up a tick to $341,941 at 102 venues. Overall, the drama has made $2.2 million through its fourth weekend.
In its tenth weekend, The Girl Who Played with Fire eased 23 percent to $182,263. With a $6.9 million total, it's still ahead of its predecessor The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by around $600,000 through the same point, though that gap continued to close.
In a sign that fall is officially underway, the art house scene was flooded with new releases this weekend. Sports drama Legendary, starring John Cena and Patricia Clarkson, earned $126,964 at 177 theaters for an anemic per theater average of $717. I'm Still Here, which documents Joaquin Phoenix's public downward spiral, grossed $96,658 from 19 theaters. Its $5,087 per theater average was soft considering the massive amount of free marketing the project received.
French romantic comedy Heartbreaker, which has already made over $41 million overseas, racked up $52,628 at just three locations, while Vietnamese romantic comedy De Mai Tinh (Fool for Love) was slightly less remarkable with $49,313 at eight venues. Katie Holmes-Josh Duhamel-Anna Paquin drama The Romantics earned $45,527 at two locations for a weekend-best $22,764 per theater average. A gradual expansion is planned for the next few weeks.
Geoffrey Rush musical Bran Nue Dae disappointed with just $23,527 at 16 locations. Documentary Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould drew some minor interest with $17,034 at three theaters, while documentary Ahead of Time had a decent $12,790 start at one site. French drama Le Refuge earned $11,124 at four locations. The Trial, starring Matthew Modine, Bob Gunton and Robert Forster, rounded up $8,957 at one theater. Family drama Logan and documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson? made $7,137 and $6,078, respectively, at one venue each.
