From its Wednesday opening through the end of the weekend, Eclipse earned a massive $104.6 million from 42 territories. This is down from New Moon's $132.1 million opening, though New Moon initially launched in more major markets. Russia led the way with an estimated $15 million, easily topping New Moon's $9 million opening there. Australia followed with $10.9 million, which qualified as one of the top ten openings ever there. Eclipse also earned $10.5 million at 720 theaters in Spain (including $5 million from preview screenings) and $9.9 million at 700 locations in Italy. In Australia, Spain and Italy, Eclipse was down from New Moon. Other noteworthy openings included $10.6 million in Brazil, $8.4 million in Mexico, and a new opening weekend record of $1.6 million in South Africa. Eclipse also grossed $5.7 million in previews in the United Kingdom, which topped Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's $5 million to set the new preview record. The third Twilight movie is scheduled to go wide in the U.K., France, South Korea and many other territories this upcoming weekend.
After over a month in limited international release, Shrek Forever After expanded significantly and earned $42.6 million. In each of its nine new territories, Shrek 4 finished in first place for the weekend. This included $13.8 million in the U.K. and $11.6 million in France, which is the biggest opening ever for a Dreamworks Animation movie. Other noteable launches came from South Korea ($6.2 million), Germany ($5.1 million) and Hong Kong ($1.6 million). Through its seventh weekend, Shrek 4 has made $137.1 million overseas for a worldwide total of $369.8 million.
In its third weekend, Toy Story 3 was off 22 percent to $31.4 million. The Pixar sequel has now earned $150.8 million overseas for a worldwide total of $439.8 million. While it didn't add any new major markets, it is now playing in 34 territories representing 37 percent of the international marketplace, and opens next weekend in Italy and Japan.
Knight & Day added 13 smaller markets for a total of 25, but still dipped 35 percent to $8 million. Through its second weekend, the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action-comedy has earned $25 million overseas. Knight & Day is set to open in China this week, then seven of the Top 15 markets the following week.
