Summit Entertainment announced that its remake of The Three Musketeers will be released on April 15, 2011. That's the same date as Scream 4.
Described as "an update of the Alexandre Dumas classic shot entirely in 3D" by Summit, The Three Musketeers (2011) will be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) and will feature Matthew Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice) as Athos, Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) as Aramis, Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) as Porthos and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) as D'Artagnan. Christoph Waltz will portray Cardinal Richelieu, Mads Mikkelsen will take on Rochefort and Milla Jovovich will play Milady de Winter. Also in the mix will be Orlando Bloom as the Duke of Buckingham.
While there have been many adaptations of The Three Musketeers, this latest one will mark the first theatrical version in nearly ten years, since The Musketeer attempted to update the classic with the then-in-vogue "wire-fu" in 2001. The Musketeer opened to $10.3 million but fizzled out at $27.1 million. Prior to that, another Musketeers adventure, The Man in the Iron Mask starring Leonardo DiCaprio, posted a $57 million total in 1998. Walt Disney Pictures tried a youthful update with The Three Musketeers (1993), featuring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris O'Donnell, and that picture debuted to $10.6 million and closed with $53.8 million. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, the latter two would equal around $100 million today.
Given the 3D rage, it won't be surprising if Summit renames their picture "The 3D Musketeers."
Another release update was made by Walt Disney Pictures today. The studio pushed The Sorcerer's Apprentice forward two days to Wednesday, July 14. That gives the fantasy a little bit of play time before Inception opens on July 16.
