Around
the World Round Up
by Kenan
Bresnan
Sorry
for the extreme delays, but I'm finally
ready to get the Weekend Report back on
schedule.
Move
aside Lord of the Rings and
Harry Potter there's a
new batch in town. Ocean's Eleven,
American Pie 2, and Spy
Game are all widening their
release to plenty more countries topping Rings
& Potter in
some of them.
Still
the winner this weekend was The
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the
Ring. The blockbuster managed to
conjure up $33.6 million from 41
countries propelling its foreign total to
$286.7 million. It still ruled the U.K.,
Germany, Spain, and South Korea with
generally mild drops. Among its debuts
were its magical $453,000 in Hungary and
out-of-this world preem in the Czech
Republic with $356,000. With Italy, Japan
and others still ahead expect the film to
reach that $578 million I originally
predicted.
Harry
Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone on
the other hand will soar past my
prediction of $578 million forking in
another $17.3 million from 50 markets,
hoisting its cume to $539.2 million. Harry
has already climbed to the
thirteenth spot on the all time list in
Australia with around $19.3 million
unseating Babe.
Ocean's
Eleven proved it was a major
international contender scamming in $12.8
million from 13 countries over the
weekend totaling $28.1 million thus far.
The remake posted Warner's second-biggest
debut ever (behind Potter)
in Germany, Austria, Australia, New
Zealand, The Netherlands, and Portugal.
Germany's $4.9 million and Austria's
$701,000 blasted well above Steven
Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich by
78% and 49% respectively. In Australia, Ocean's
Eleven blasted off with the
industry's 11th highest bow ever with
$2.8 million. The film grabbed $717,000
in the Netherlands and $345,000 in
Portugal. In Switzerland the crime-caper
grabbed Warner Brothers' third-best
opening ever with $769,000. The
star-studded affair also landed in
Thailand with $714,000 and Israel with
$613,000.
Making
its final major market stop, American
Pie 2 cooked up $1.4 million in
Mexico, pushing its foreign total to
$131.4 million.
Spy
Game ensured strong starts and a
possible century mark finish over the
weekend especially in France, where it
commanded pole position (overthrowing Rings)
with $2.8 million, Mexico with $990,000,
and Belgium with $331,000.
Next
weekend Black Hawk Down gives
The Fellowship a rung for its
money in the United Kingdom opening along
Iris and Long
Time Dead. In Germany Don't
Say a Word tries to whisper its
way to the top alongside Thir13en
Ghosts and Innocence.
Australia gets In the Bedroom,
Jeepers Creepers, Serendipity,
and Sous le Sable (Under
the Sand). And France gets a
huge amount of openers including Thir13en
Ghosts, Bandits,
Hearts in Atlantis, and Behind
Enemy Lines.
Expect Black
Hawk Down to garnish about $5
million in the U.K. leading Rings,
which should fall to about $4.8 million.
In Germany Ocean's Eleven should
continue to lead at $3.8 million while in
Australia Eleven should
continue at about $1.5 million. In France
the openers should cancel each other out
leading Rings to
recapture the lead with $2.8 million.
These are my predicted
foreign totals for the selected films:
Spy Game:
$112 million
Ocean's Eleven:
$205 million
The Lord of the
Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
$578 million
Harry Potter &
the Sorcerer's Stone: $577
million (I'm going out on a limb!)
Atlantis: The Lost
Empire: $78 million
The Princess
Diaries: $71 million
Shrek: $259
million
American Pie 2:
$161 million
The Others:
$126 million

numbers.
