NOTE: This chart is for musicals -- movies where people break out into song with no on or off screen source of music or in settings other than concert venues or recording studios. That's distinctly different from concerts or movies about the music industry a la A Star is Born, The Jazz Singer or Glitter. Additionally, Bollywood masala movies are not being counted as they are a genre unto themselves. Unfortunately, grosses for Shock Treatment and Rock 'n' Roll High School are unavailable. The record is largely incomplete prior to 1982, as box office wasn't tracked terribly well before then -- it was a stretch just to go back to 1975. Grosses are available for some major pre-1975 musicals, however there are too many holes in regards to other musicals to include in this chart. If there are any movies that you think should be on this list, e-mail us at mail@boxofficemojo.com .
